The Nayaks were once the viceroys of the Vijayanagara rulers and later became rulers themselves.This art gallery in Thanjavur or Tanjore is widely appreciated for its unique collection of bronze icons and other artifacts that represent the rich artistic sensibility that prevailed in the prime of Tamil history.Most of the relics hail from the Chola period between the 9th and the 13th centuries AD, the post-Chola period, followed by the Nayak period, from the 17th to the 18th century AD and then right till the Pallava period. Many of the works of art were excavated as they were buried to safeguard from the possible intruders.The Thanjavur Art Gallery started its glorious journey in 1951 and the vast complex includes in its vicinity the Saraswati Library and the Sangeetha Sabha or Music Hall along with the art gallery.The collections of statuette and figurines made of stone along with the bronze pieces are displayed mainly in three sections.Pooja Mahal , at the entrance of the Thanjavur Art Gallery, and the hall at the base of the Indira Mandir or Arsenal tower flaunt the wonderful forms of God in stone.The Rama Chowdam Hall , once the private audience hall of the Nayaks boasts of an assortment of bronze images on display.The tourists throng the Thanjavur Art Gallery also for the representative glass paintings of Tanjore which were fostered by royal patronage.The myriad colors and stylized modeling nurtured by exquisite craftsmanship created these valuable pieces of art encrusted with gold sheets, pearls, gems and stones
